The study of English helps students to express themselves clearly and effectively in written and spoken forms, but it is also a discipline that can inspire and motivate students to live their lives with confidence and purpose. It has the potential to change the way we see the world. Learn how to “read the word and the world”.

At NCEA Level One, students are assigned to classes based on their identified learning needs. Each class works at a different pace and offers different assessment; however, all classes offer students the opportunity to gain the 10 Literacy credits required to achieve NCEA Level One.

In a Level One course, students should expect to take part in a range of learning experiences, including:

  • Reading and analysing poetry
  • Reading and analysing a novel or short stories
  • Viewing and analysing a film
  • Creating visual communications, such as advertising
  • Writing in formal styles
  • Writing in creative styles
  • Public speaking
  • Studying a Shakespearian drama.

Each course is tailored to suit the learning needs, interests and desires of its students. Courses are often themed around one or more topics, such as war, racism, science fiction, relationships, or fate and free will. 

The standards listed below indicate the range of assessments students may undertake. Each class will attempt approximately 20 credits.
