Course Description

After Te Whakatōtanga, Te Tupuranga and Te Puāwaitanga, Te Pakaritanga 1 (Level 2) offers an opportunity for students to truly express themselves, independently and confidently, using Te Reo Māori and The Performing Arts. There is a strong focus on self-efficacy and using what we have learnt to communicate with each other. 

The learning will be guided and facilitated by the teacher but there will be opportunity for Tuakana/Teina to come into effect with the help of students who choose to do Te Pakaritanga 2. 

The course is designed and tailored to meet the desire and interests of students with the proposal of possible topics which include:

Raukawatanga, Matariki, Aotearoa and Rangatiratanga

Key areas of focus in Level 2 Te Reo Māori include:

- Listening skills in Te Reo Māori

- Writing skills 

- Reading comprehension skills ( Answering questions) 

- Presenting

There are 16 credits available Internally and 12 credits Externally


Course Overview

Term 1
Raukawatanga - This term will be focused on learning about our rohe (region), Ngāti Raukawa and all it's entirety. We will be researching pūrākau (stories), waiata and rangatira (chiefs) particular to our area.
There will be a Marae visit this term with some rich history told about our wonderful area by local kau matua.
Students who choose this paper will be involved in an overnight stay to learn about the history, to prepare and to host our lovely Year 7 and 8s.

Term 2
Matariki - This term will acknowledge te tauhou Māori (Māori New Year) and all of its representations. We will focus on what it means to our culture and also relate it to other cultures.
This is a big term for the whole school to come together and celebrate our successes together.
There will be performances and a kaihakari at the end of the term.

Term 3
Aotearoa - In term 3 we will be branching out into the wider Aotearoa scene where we will be learning about the history of our beloved country, including the names of places, regions, chiefs, tribes etc.
A trip to a Museum will be included in this course.

Term 4
Rangatiratanga - Authority
The main focus of this term is prepare for end of year exams. We will be solely working on previous exams to help us excel in the external assessments.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

1B5 or 1B8 or Refill and ringbinder and there may be a small contribution of $40.00 for Marae Wananga and weekend stay-over.

Te Puāwaitanga (Year 11 Māori)

Te Reo me ngā Tikanga Māori can help students to gain a strong sense of identity for them to be proud of who they are regardless of where they come from and where their career pathways may lead them.

This course is approved for University Entrance.
